Undergraduate Pilot Training – The First Checkride — 3 Comments

  1. I was an Instructor in Physiological Training at Reese from 3-66 until 2-69. In these years I met some “hard ass” IP’s who informed me that all the renewal stuff that they were doing was a waste and “I know all that stuff already”. My reply was muted but the “hard ass” was the last to finish his training; I wonder if the bone head had any idea what was happening to him. There were instances when navigators would be in the UPT program and and I got the same crap from them…and they got the same treatment as the “hard ass” IP…I enjoyed my time at Reese; I did my job well enough to be selected Airman of the Month and received nothing but high marks from the young students who were going through the program…grateful to have had the opportunity to serve my country. Thanks for yours…

  2. We had a classmate in 63-G at Craig AFB, Alabama, that must have failed every checkride at least once. I flew solo lead for his second formation checkride in a T-33. Hard to keep from breaking when all one sees on a rejoin is the bottom of an aircraft. It was irritating that he had a guaranteed F-102 assignment if he was graduated… Louisiana Air National Guard.
Luckily I never failed a checkride — even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while.
