Every few days I check the spam folder to look for any “ham” (as the filter calls any comments it has mid-identified and that should have been allowed to pass). I’ve found a few, but for the most part, the filter does a terrific job.
I realize that this garbage is all computer generated, but the variety is truly astonishing, from idiotic to obscene. Every once in a while, it’s hilarious, especially considering the post that drew the comment.
It occurred to me that I should share some of them with visitors. It also seems appropriate to use a dedicated header that my WordPress theme refers to as a “featured image,” the purpose of which is to replace the default header that would otherwise appear. My choice of header symbolically connects the proliferation of spam with that of the American cockroach.
The earliest cockroach-like fossils date from the Carboniferous period between 354–295 million years ago. Fossilized evidence further indicates that ancestors of the modern-day cockroach appeared in the early Cretaceous period between 145.5-65.5 million years ago. Conclusion: they’ve been around a long time, and they will undoubtedly be here long after Homo sapiens exists only in fossilized form.
For those of us who don’t like co-existing with cockroaches any more than necessary, eradication from even the small portion of the planet contained within our living quarters is an exercise in futility. Like Jack Nicholson’s Johnny in “The Shining,” they’re always back.
Spam is like that. Every time I empty the spam folder, it’s not long before more of them are scrambling around in the dark.
